AgeX Aging
Welcome to ageX … this is just for us!
“Put simply this is an exercise programme designed by people over 50 for people over 50, and run by people over 50.” where ‘no pain, no gain’ is a no-no in our workouts.
The genesis: A couple of friends decided it was time to “do something” about the side effects of good living and a slightly more sedentary lifestyle - the slow drift south of their body shape. They weren’t planning to become Greek gods, and didn’t intend to drop the things that they enjoyed. But sensibly they thought that a little toning and tuning might just help their overall fitness, improve their health and allow them to live well for longer. A very reasonable proposition.
So they joined a health club and went through the induction process. And the proposition ground to a shuddering halt.
They are not particularly vain people, and certainly not lacking in confidence, but after one session the wife vowed never to go again. “Being surrounded by lithe young lycra-clad bodies, being called “dear” by a girl fresh out of college who clearly had not one iota of an idea about my needs, just made me think this was all a big mistake.”
At least she got there. The husband was so put off by the induction experience that he took up jogging to get himself in shape to go to the club. Why ? Because his jogging was private and carried out on his terms. When he is out jogging he is not made to feel overweight or out of condition, but is just a guy doing his own thing at his own pace.
And strangely, that is the beginning of ageX.
I have been involved in fitness training all my long life, both professionally and personally. A gym holds no horrors for me. Nevertheless, I see that it can be a daunting place. With either muscle-bound gorillas prowling around or impossibly slender people with attitude, it does not welcome those of us who may be showing the wear and tear of a full life.
My mates were spot on with their fitness ambitions, so why not create a forum for them to achieve them in the right atmosphere in the right company?
